Creosote buildup from burning pine and unseasoned wood
Why it happens here
Many Karori homeowners burn pine because it is readily available, but pine produces more creosote than hardwood. The valley's cool, damp air slows draft, letting creosote condense inside the flue. Over one winter, buildup can reach dangerous levels.
Our approach
We use a Sooteater rotary tool and wire brush to remove glazed creosote. Then we apply a creosote sweeping log and advise on seasoned hardwood. We also recommend a mid-season check if you burn more than two cords.
